Today's Top News

1. Comcast trial combines HBO, broadband and local TV

Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) confirmed that it is testing a low-cost bundle of services that includes HBO, TV Everywhere service HBO Go, local broadcast channels and high-speed Internet access.

The MSO is charging $39.99 to $49.99 monthly for the "Internet Plus" package, with pricing varying in local markets. DSL Reports had the scoop on the new offer Thursday, and Comcast confirmed the test in a Variety report on Friday.

The move comes about one month after Comcast stopped offering the low-cost MyTV Choice programming package to new subscribers. While Comcast is still requiring subscribers to use a set-top in order to receive local broadcast channels, it is the first pay TV provider to not require customers to subscribe to expanded basic networks in order to receive premium cable network like HBO Go.

2. Verizon trademarks ELLIPSIS for new video, voice data device and service

Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) filed a patent application earlier this month indicating it could be developing a new mobile video, voice and data device and service called ELLIPSIS. The move is particularly interesting as it comes just days after Verizon CFO Fran Shammo revealed on an earnings call that Verizon had terminated its joint innovation venture that it launched with Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and Bright House Networks after it purchased spectrum from the major MSOs in December 2011.

Verizon filed a patent application for ELLIPSIS and ELLIPSIS 7

According to the copyright application filed by Verizon on Oct. 15,  ELLIPSIS is a "wireless telecommunications device featuring transmission of voice, data, image and video."

Verizon also filed a separate copyright application on Oct. 14 for the brand ELLIPSIS 7, reserving the right to that name for wireless telecom devices, tablet computers and a device that "establishes a local, wireless network" and would have a music player and a still image and video camera.

It's not clear how, or if, Verizon may commercialize the ELLIPSIS brand. The carrier doesn't currently offer any device called Ellipsis or Ellipsis 7, but a document posted on the Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Play store for Android smartphones and tablets shows there is some type of device, called Ellipsis 7, from Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer Quanta Corp. Interestingly, Quanta supplies the LI170 LTE LGA module to Verizon Wireless, and it can be embedded in any type of handheld device to enable wireless connectivity. "With low power consumption and least-sized bit-to-air turn-key solution characteristics, the LI170 easily turns any hand-held devices into LTE-ready and provides users seamless mobile broadband internet access, video streaming at home, office or on the move," Verizon says on its website.  Verizon and Quanta did not respond to requests for comment at deadline.

This latest patent application by Verizon is just one of many that show the company is working on new technologies that could allow it to deliver personalized programming to subscribers. The company has filed other applications that use near-field communication chips in mobile devices and set-tops. For example, the telco may be able to authenticate access to TV Everywhere apps on smartphones and tablets by allowing subscribers to tap mobile devices to a set-top or remote control. It may also be able to deliver personalized programming to viewers based on the device a family member taps to a set-top.

3. Verizon, Outerwall to ramp up Redbox Instant marketing

After generating increased subscribers and engagement for Redbox Instant in the third quarter, owners Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and Outerwall plan to step up marketing efforts in Q4, Outerwall CEO J. Scott Di Valerio said Thursday.

Verizon and Outerwall haven't detailed subscriber numbers since launching Redbox Instant by Verizon last December. The Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) rival charges $8 monthly for access to an online video library of 7,800 movies and four DVD rentals.

Hinting that Redbox Instant will soon expand to new devices, Di Valerio told analysts on Outerwall's third-quarter earnings call that he expects more consumers will know about Redbox Instant by the end of the year.

"We should see a bit of work getting done there, more awareness around Redbox Instant, as well as more people coming through [the] top of the funnel should be happening here in the fourth quarter and moving into the first quarter as well," Di Valerio said.

Redbox Instant is currently available on Roku streaming video set-tops, computers, iOS and Android mobile devices, Samsung connected TVs and Blu-ray players, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) TV and the Xbox 360.

"We continue to move through and have a large number of CE devices that will work," Di Valerio said.

Redbox revenue jumped 9.3 percent to $587.4 million in Q3. Outerwall said it generated $16 million from its New Ventures segment, which includes Redbox Instant by Verizon and its ecoATM business.

4. Dyle taking mobile TV service on marketing tour

One year after launching Dyle, the TV station groups that own the mobile TV service said they plan to kick off a marketing tour on Nov. 4 in Dallas and Charlotte, N.C.

Mobile Content Venture, which owns Dyle, said the marketing push will cover 12 cities. The company is calling it the "National Coffeehouse Mobile TV Tech Tour."

Dyle competes with TV Everywhere applications offered by pay TV distributors and programmers. While Dyle initially required users to attach antennas to smartphones and tablets in order to watch live programming from local TV stations, it recently unveiled a mobile TV receiver from Audiovox. The small box contains an antenna which can transmit video to mobile devices.

"The addition of the Audiovox mobiletv receiver allows a broader audience to enjoy local news coverage while on-the-go, and we are thrilled to demonstrate the ease and convenience of this device," Salil Dalvi, co-general manager of Mobile Content Venture, said in a prepared statement.

5. Shaw drops 29,522 video subscribers in fiscal Q4
